This original Tall Adaptable Desk circa 1770- 1785 was used by Thomas Jefferson at his Monticello estate for reading and drawing. The solid mahogany top features a mitered breadboard, a staple of Jefferson joinery and Colonial American furniture. It features hand-carved Chinese fretwork brackets beneath the skirt. This adds not only a decorative detail but is also a functional motif—contributing additional stability to the piece.
The bulk of the desk is crafted out of Mahogany and supported by six legs. A bail handle pulls forward the front of the desk to reveal a flat tooled leather writing surface—accented by hand-cut mahogany dovetails. The two legs that support this unique feature blend into the piece when not in use. The drawer slides are hand-crafted out of mahogany and feature a sliding dovetail.
This piece includes the brass list which is missing in the original. The brass list would have prevented books, paper, or writing implements from slipping off the angled front.
