Rising Sun Chair 4 part blog series

Posted by Chicone on November 9, 2014

I have often and often in the course of the Session, and the vicissitudes of my hopes and fears as to its issue, looked at that behind the President without being able to tell whether it was rising or setting: But now at length I have the happiness to know that it is a rising and not a setting Sun.

Benjamin Franklin on the Rising Sun Chair

This four part blog series chronicles the construction of the Rising Sun Chair, with its extensive hand carving and gold leaf.

Rising Sun Chair: Part 1 introduction

The Rising Sun Chair is one of the most iconic furniture pieces from the American Revolutionary War period. The very seat George Washington sat in as he signed the Constitution. We invite your to follow along our summer blog series as we craft a reproduction of this historic piece.

Rising Sun Chair: Part 2 templating

Construction on the Rising Sun Chair has begun. The first step was to create a series of templates for various aspects of the chair.

Rising Sun Chair: Part 3 carving

We have been busy hand carving the crest rail, back splat, arms, and legs of the Rising Sun Chair. Check out our progress in our latest blog post.

Rising Sun Chair: Part 4 final pictures

Hand crafting a piece furniture like the Rising Sun Chair is a labor of love. The templating, carving, finishing, assembly, and great attention to detail forges an intimate relationship between the craftsman and the piece. It is always bitter sweet to say good bye to what we have invested so much of ourselves in. But we send it off with pride and with the satisfaction that only comes with crafting such an iconic embodiment of American history with our own two hands.
